Rooms with a View 2012 Continued
It’s a good thing designer and blogging friend Lisa Ehrlich is so organized. Due to a family emergency she couldn’t attend the showhouse on Friday, but her lovely space was in perfect order ahead of schedule. Depicting “A Young Lady Starting Out,” the 5’6″ x 8′ vignette “showcases a cultured young lady’s first NYC studio apartment.” I remember my first studio and I only wish it had been this pretty and polished!…

Rooms with a View 2012 Part 2
Part of the fun of Rooms with a View is discovering the story behind the spaces, especially when they have personal resonance. As Helen Koch said of business partner John Murphy, both below, “John was thrilled to learn he had been chosen for Rooms with a View but even more so when he heard the theme was ‘Design on a Shoestring.’
John is a hunter gatherer at heart and has trouble passing up a yard sale, fleamarket or antique mart, so he was excited to recently acquire a barrel game table set from a childhood friend in Barrington, RI whose parents had sold their house and were downsizing.…

Rooms with a View 2012
One of my favorite design events here in Connecticut is Rooms with a View. Originally conceived by Albert Hadley 18 years ago, the popular fundraiser transforms the Southport Congregational Church into a showhouse featuring twelve 5′ x8′ mini rooms created by local and NYC designers.…

Revisiting Sister Parish
I can’t believe it’s been ten years since the publication of the original volume “Sister Parish” by Apple Parish Bartlett and Susan Bartlett Crater (a daughter and granddaughter of the legendary designer). Compiled from Sister’s unpublished memoirs and augmented by many interviews with friends, family, staff and fellow design icons, it is a wonderful insider look at an era and a life.…

Veranda Remembers Albert Hadley
I never wrote about the passing of Albert Hadley because as much as I admired the legendary decorator, I had never really had any personal dealings with him. I thought I should leave that to those who knew him well and had worked with him throughout the years.…

Rooms with a View – Reveal #2
I had intended to share 4 rooms a day as I did for the previews, but due to technological issues (leaving my charger at the Apple store), there will be only one room today – that of John Todd Bishop, who is next in line.…

Rooms with a View Inspiration – Part 3
I’m so excited for the Gala Preview of Rooms with a View this evening and, in anticipation, am presenting today the final group of designers. In case you haven’t noticed, they have been listed on the blog in alphabetical order, in groups of four so as not to overwhelm.…

Rooms with a View Inspiration – Part 2
Today we are continuing to meet the designers who will be presenting their rooms tomorrow night at the Gala Preview for Rooms with a View.
After honing his skills with such distinguished designers such as Albert Hadley, Brian McCarthy and Dennis Rolland, John Todd Bishop opened his eponymous firm in 2007.…

Rooms with a View Inspiration
In anticipation of the Rooms with a View Gala Preview next week, I thought it might be fun to meet each designer, see their original sketches and learn the answer to the question: “In your design, what is it about Mr Albert Hadley that inspires you?”
Michael Adams opened his own design firm following a decade of working for some of the most respected designers in New York.…
