Flowers really do make you happy. Not only do nature’s bountiful blooms enhance any setting but bring beauty and lift spirits on any occasion. In fact, many studies find that flowers have an immediate impact on happiness and a long-term positive effect on moods for both givers and recipients. Of course the floral industry already knew this and decided to embrace the positive power of flowers with a wonderful pay it forward concept. Initiated by the Society of American Florists, Petal It Forward started with a small idea that grew into a plan that the entire floral industry wanted to embrace. For the third year in a row, on a random Wednesday – this year it’s today, October 11 – industry members nationwide (with 561 local events in 459 cities and 50 states plus D.C. and Canada!) are taking to the streets with tens of thousands of flowers to surprise random passersby with two bouquets – one to keep and one to share, with a friend, family member, co-worker or even a complete stranger. Take a peek at what happened during Petal It Forward last year.
With all the disheartening news in the world lately, I love this feel-good initiative that harnesses the power of random kindness. If you are one of the lucky recipients today, I hope that you were not only surprised and thrilled with your gift but felt the sense of positivity and delight when you payed it forward.
