Welcome to the Mayflower

Welcome to the Mayflower

A mere two hours from New York City, nestled in the heart of rural Connecticut, sits an idyllic luxury resort resembling more English country house than 5 star hotel.

With a timeless sense of civilized gentility, yet fully equipped with contemporary creature comforts, the Mayflower Inn is a lush private retreat of understated elegance. This summer I was thrilled to receive an invitation to visit.

After a leisurely drive through the back roads of beautiful Litchfield country, and down a long winding driveway, one arrives at what looks like a gracious country estate.

Originally a private school for boys, the Mayflower Inn was founded in 1920.…

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week | Badgley Mischka Spring 2013

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week | Badgley Mischka Spring 2013

It’s not surprising that at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, the Badgley Mischka team of Mark Badgley and James Mischka were inspired by the 1935 version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Legendary directory Max Reinhardt’s amazing Shakespearean fantasy with magical sets and costumes was one of the most visually spectacular of its time. As film aficionados (last season they channeled Fritz Lang’s Metropolis), they could appreciate the evocative effects and successfully emulated the flowing and glittering romanticism of the movie’s spirit, as seen in this smoke lace gown, with petal details. In combination with Peter Gray’s casually chic hairstyling, it had a most fairie-like sylvan appeal.…

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week | Naeem Khan Spring 2013

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week | Naeem Khan Spring 2013

At Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Naeem Khan‘s collections are, for me, perennial favorites. Their timeless glamour, elegant  embellishment and incredible craftsmanship make for covetable creations and this spring was no exception. Showing more daywear than usual, Khan’s inspiration came from “elemental beauty and cultural landscapes.” This imagery, from florals and geometric patterns to dessert sunsets and ocean surf, was then digitally translated into “prints, beading, threadwork and laser cut leather designs,” the latter an especially popular theme throughout the shows. One of my favorite pieces, in fact, was this mosaic leather appliqué satin cardigan/jacket shown over cotton sateen pants – so chic!…

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week | Tory Burch Spring 2013

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week | Tory Burch Spring 2013

At Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, tt was a bright sunny day inside and out for the Tory Burch show at Avery Fisher hall. We all knew immediately what color was going to be the star of the show.

After her fabulous fall show, channeling an interesting storyline for a sophisticated step up in her fashion profile, I wasn’t quite sure what direction she would take for spring.  But it seems all is upbeat and relaxed in Toryland, as she presented a confident easy-going collection incorporating her interest in travel with her classic American sensibilities. The name of the game these days is globalization and Tory did a great job incorporating exotic themes in a very wearable way.…

Wait For It – Spring 2013 From NYFW Continues

Wait For It – Spring 2013 From NYFW Continues

I came home from my final fashion week show feeling rather under the weather. So I will continue with my reviews of the Spring 2013 collections hopefully tomorrow but in the meantime, here’s a little peek of just some of what I saw on the runways.

Do stop back tomorrow – I should hopefully be (at least somewhat) rejuvenated by then!! And if you missed the first three reviews, now’s your chance to grab a glance.

Reem Acra at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week

Reem Acra at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week

Reem Acra, in her show notes, cited Aaron Young’s famous motorcycle art as inspiration for her collection. His reductionist, raw, minimalistic work did not seem to me particularly compatible with Acra’s usual ultra feminine sensibilities. To her credit, however, she translated the artist’s work into trim, tailored silhouettes with an edgy attitude for expanded daywear, making a “compelling statement on modern femininity.” From literal laser cut leather motorcycle jacket

to tailored dresses and ensembles with similar leather laser cut details,

Acra added her spin to modern motorcycle chic. Leather was also interpreted in solid brights with contrasting pumps.

She then segued into more luxurious fabrics, adding more drape and flow in ivory, midnight and the occasional red silks.…

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Spring 2013 | Lela Rose

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Spring 2013 | Lela Rose

At Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Lela Rose frequently cites an artist or, in the case of last season, an architect, as inspiration for her collection. This time round, her muse was poetic installation artist Jim Hodges, whose work focuses on “the duality between lightness and mass, fragility and permanence…and the frailty of the human experience.” I love the intellectual component of Rose’s work and you can certainly see the translation of Hodges’ dichotomies, as expressed in his well known curtain of flowers,

in Rose’s floral prints and flowing fabrics, such as this withering landscape organza dress.

While she interpreted Hodges’ woven webs of chain rather literally in some of the pieces, I found the more successful executions were webs expressed in beautiful guipure lace, cut out and reassembled as flattering mirror image silhouettes.…

Christian Siriano | New York Fashion Week Spring 2013

Christian Siriano | New York Fashion Week Spring 2013

Christian Siriano, with his pretty Spring 2013 collection, seems to have officially left Project Runway behind and moved on to his deserved position as mainstream fashion designer. Inspired by the movement and costumes of ballet, specifically the American Ballet Theatre’s Dream Ballet, this collection featured soft and romantic colors and shapes. Looks for a “pretty but not perfect” ballerina in practice were styled by Antoinette Beenders, Aveda‘s global creative director and MAC‘s lead makeup artist Polly Osmond.

Daytime looks featured this lovely watercolor-like ballet print, fashioned, above, into a sleeveless blouse and cropped pant with an elegantly simple swing coat on top.…

At the Movies

At the Movies

It’s been quite a while since we’ve had an installment of At the Movies. Even though there is so much style and design content to cover, I felt like a little break might be refreshing before moving on to the the frenetic pace of Fashion Week. Over the last month or so, with staggered re-entries, our house has been focussed on back to school. Whether preparing for law or middle school, it’s an all-encompassing process that includes trends across the board, from dorm decorating to the hot must-have binder (the perfectly usable ones from last year so passé) to the most fashion forward dress code-compatible collared blouse.…

DwellStudio Modern Color Theory for Robert Allen Design

DwellStudio Modern Color Theory for Robert Allen Design

DwellStudio is already over a decade old – it’s hard to believe! Originally focussed on bedding, the company, founded in 1999 by Christiane Lemieux, now encompasses a full range of offerings, from furniture to textiles, recently opening a flagship store in Soho. Last year, the brand, known for its spirited use of color and pattern, teamed with Robert Allen Design to create two residential fabric collections together and yesterday, I was delighted to get a behind-the scenes look at the development of their latest collaboration, Modern Color Theory.

Lemieux was on hand, along with Robert Allen Design executives Hannah Alderson, Director, Fabric Design and Christy Almond VP, Fabric Design, above, with the designer.…
