At the Movies

Now that it is December, today will be our first Christmas movie suggestion. There are obviously  many wonderful films over the years to choose from. My favorite growing up was It’s a Wonderful Life but it is now a tad too overplayed to consider. Another film from the same era (one year later) is our choice for today. The Bishop’s Wife is certainly a well known movie, but I do find there are still people who have not seen it.

This film, in my mind, should be on everyone’s Christmas classic list. And it is a great movie to watch at this time of year as it will most certainly put you in the holiday spirit, both aesthetically and psychologically, for lack of a better word. It is the story of an angel (Cary Grant) who comes down to earth to answer a busy Bishop’s (David Niven) prayer. Loretta Young plays Niven’s lovely yet neglected wife and there is a great supporting cast with Monty Woolley, James Gleason and Elsa Lanchester. Grant is as charming and debonair as ever and Young so perfectly plays his naive foil. The movie is worth watching for the famous skating scene alone.

An enchanting heartwarming movie with tons of holiday atmosphere, this is perfect to watch with the family by a roaring fire with a cup of cocoa. What could be better?!

  1. It’s been a long time since we pulled this one out and I think the last time we watched it, it was the more recent version with Denzel Washington. I’m definitely adding the Cary Grant (swoon!) version to our viewing list this year!

    • Hi Buzz – Oh definitely add – it will make your day! As you will see, the version unfortunately can’t compare.

  2. I haven’t seen this movie yet and I am loving your idea of having a classic, a cup of cocoa and some popcorn. Can I add some dark chocolate M&M’s too? lol

I need to decorate my house for Chirstmas during the weekend, but maybe, after that I can just enjoy the decor and watch this movie… that would be fun!

Oh, if you can, go take a look at post today. It’s very interesting. HEIDI KLUM and SEAL just bout a house in LA with the most beautiful Italian rose garden… let me know what you think.

    • Hi Luciane – So happy to introduce this movie to people who haven’t yet seen it. You will LOVE it and of course add the dark M&M’s. I’ll be by in a bit.

  3. Thank you for the suggestion! I always loved Christmas movies! They remind me so much of my childhood when my mother was baking pancakes while we were watching a good movie! Oh what a beautiful period of the year, isn’t it!!
Have a wonderful weekend my friend!

    • et – he’s my favorite as well – doesn’t get any better! You’ll love rewatching – perfect for now!!

  5. They used to show the classic “King Kong” for some reason on Manhattan TV on Thanksgiving afternoon, for some reason unknown to me, but now I always the film with that holiday. At least “The Bishop’s Wife” is more seasonally appropriate in addition to being a lovely film. The cast was incredible and Loretta Young is always a treat, too.

    • Hi John – King Kong?! How strange – we got March of the Wooden Soldiers on Thanksgiving, even though it features Santa. Lovely is the perfect word for The Bishop’s Wife – I wonder if it streams instantly on Netflix – I didn’t check – if so I’ll be watching tonight!

  6. We definitely have the same taste in movies. I watched this last Christmas and it was my favourite Christmas film in a very long time. I’ve recommended it to all my friends xx
