The Collection of Charlotte Moss at Stair Galleries
Charlotte Moss is one of the great tastemakers of our time. Her rooms are the stuff of legend: deeply layered, historically referential, full of the kind of objects that tell you exactly who lives there and how much they love beauty. So when I heard that her collection featuring nearly 200 lots from her legendary Upper East Side townhouse was heading to auction at Stair Galleries, I immediately flagged my calendar.

The Collection of Charlotte Moss takes place on April 29th at 10:00 AM ET at Stair Galleries in Hudson, New York, with both live and online bidding available. Think English furniture, fine art, porcelain, textiles, and all those in-between objects that are the secret to a room feeling genuinely finished rather than simply decorated. This isn’t just a sale of beautiful things — it’s a window into how one of the most accomplished designers of her generation actually thinks and lives. Charlotte has always said that great rooms are built over time, and this auction is the evidence.
I’ve had the great pleasure of spending time with Charlotte on many occasions and on camera for Quintessence — she is exactly as brilliant and generous in person as you’d imagine, and our conversations about how she approaches collecting, layering, and the life of rooms are ones I come back to often. If you haven’t seen those videos on the Quintessence YouTube channel, now is a very good moment to watch them before you dive into the catalog.
Some Personal Favorites
Lot 9 — Chinese Black Lacquer and Parcel-Gilt Chinoiserie Doors Four panels, black lacquer with parcel-gilt chinoiserie decoration and gilt-bronze and jade handles. This is the kind of architectural element that changes a room — whether you hang them as art, repurpose them as cabinet doors, or use them as a folding screen. Deeply glamorous and completely unexpected.

Lot 10 — Beretta et Cie Vallauris Yellow Glazed Pottery Part Service Vallauris pottery has had a long moment, and for good reason — it’s cheerful, tactile, and full of personality. It’s been copied in many contemporary versions but never has quite the same organic earthy quality. I own two plates gifted to me by a very stylish friend and wish I had more. The sunny yellow glaze here is exactly the kind of thing Charlotte deploys to bring warmth and life to a table. A wonderful, approachable lot.

Lot 62 — Pair of Zuber Painted Wallpaper Panels Zuber is one of the gold standards of scenic wallpaper, and a pair of panels in good condition is a genuine find. The curtain detail at the top are a particularly charming element. Frame them, hang them, build a room around them — the possibilities are endless and the result is always spectacular.

Lot 126 — Ikat Cotton Upholstered Sofa with Two Lumbar Pillows Ikat has been a Charlotte Moss signature for decades and this famous Pierre Frey iteration has that handmade, slightly irregular quality that reads as both exotic and deeply livable. I actually shot Charlotte’s adorable pups on this sofa for At Home with Dogs and Their Designers. All set with lumbar pillows for a lucky someone to enhance their home’s decor

Lot 174 — Horst P. Horst, Bergdorf Goodman Advertisement Horst is one of the towering figures of 20th century photography, and a Bergdorf Goodman advertisement from his hand sits at the perfect intersection of fashion, glamour, and New York cultural history. Already beautifully framed, it is a platinum print, 1935, printed later, signed and numbered 8/25 on the reverse.

Lot 183 — Pair of Vladimir Kanevsky Porcelain Blackberry Models Kanevsky’s botanical porcelains are exquisite — obsessively detailed, sculptural, and completely enchanting on a bookshelf, a mantle, or a bedside table. Charlotte, along with other luminaries, has been a devoted collector. Many of you may have seen his spectacular installations at the Frick and you may also like to watch our visit with Vladimir in his studio. These are the quiet discoveries that reveal how good a collector’s eye really is.
