This elegant design originated with Italian Count Annibale II Ferniani in the late 18th century. He had both a fascination with porcelain from the far east as well as a need to be in the forefront of fashion. The Ferniani ceramic manufacturer designed the original multicolored version of this Imari-inspired majolica classic known as Garofano (carnation). After WWII, it was Gio Ponti, then the art director at Ginori, who suggested making the plate in just three shades of blues and in 2000 Ginori officially collaborated with the more contemporary Italian manufacturer of this plate, producing since 1874, to use a printed version of the design, which became Oriente Italiano. This, however, is the original and still completely handmade and hand painted.
