Winter White

Yesterday I awoke to winter white in all its natural loveliness. As Keats said, it was a thing of beauty. Sometimes nature does all the talking.

From Venus to Mars: Gifts for Guys 2

This year, I found an eclectic assortment of gifts for guys of all tastes. Whether in the realm of practical or fantastical, here is some inspiration devoted to the Y chromosome crowd. Hardy Amies is responsible for my favorite quote regarding men’s fashion: “A man should look as if he has bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care, and then forgotten all about them.”  This sartorial primer doles out classic advice for the traditionally dressed man in your life.…

Stellar Stella

I love a great marketing campaign. There are so many bad commercials out there that when you see something special it’s like a breath of fresh air. Stella Artois, the upscale boutique Belgian lager, has a long history and over the years its advertising campaigns have frequently had associations with films.…

In Honor Of

In honor of Veteran’s Day, I have chosen this wonderful Alfred Eisenstaedt photo that appeared in Life Magazine, which features a U.S. Navy sailor grabbing a nurse in a spontaneous moment in Times Square as America celebrated the end of World War II when Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945.…

Monica’s Magic

I would imagine that most of you are familiar with Monica Rich Kosann, who started as a portrait photographer and has since branched out to design jewelry and home accessories. With her boutique at Bergdorf’s, new book, Living With What You Love, and recent induction into the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), she has become a rising star.…

Levi’s Photo Workshop

Artistic collaborations seems to be the trend now in retail – J. Crew having taken the lead in this category. However, others are right on their heels. My latest favorite is actually a fantastic interactive idea from Levi’s. The Photo Workshop, which opened on October 7th in NYC, is Levi’s second in their workshop series – the first was a print workshop in San Francisco this past summer.…

The Heritage of Houdini

There are so many terrific ongoing and upcoming exhibits at the museums in New York this fall that it’s hard to keep up. One of the more unusual shows opens next week at the Jewish Museum. Houdini: Art and Magic is the first major American museum exhibition about the famous magician and the impact he has had on visual media.…

Game Day

I am not a big online game player – I have very few apps on my iphone and the only two games I have are both free: Wordwarp and Hangman (for my daughter). I am, however, totally hooked on Wordwarp – it is a fun, challenging word game that is great for when you are waiting at the doctor or orthodontist’s office, in line at school pick up or on the train.…

Andre the Giant

Giant of photography that is. As if there weren’t enough reasons to go to Paris already, there is now another. The Jeu de Paume Museum is showing the first major European retrospective of Andre Kertesz, one of my all time favorite photographers.…

In Vogue

Just in time for Fashion Week and and Fashion’s Night Out, which I discussed earlier today, Vogue has announced the fabulous overhaul of its website, vogue.com (of course). What an improvement!! Vogue was evidently given a hefty budget by Conde Nast to update their online presence and it shows.…
