At the Movies | Downhill Racer

Downhill RacerWith the recent snowstorm, I decided to post about an old favorite, Downhill Racer, which some longtime readers may remember I had written about several years ago. This cult classic from 1969 stars Robert Redford in one of his earliest roles.…

Goodbye to a Great | Peter O’Toole

I couldn’t let the passing of Peter O’Toole go by without at least a quick nod to the late great actor. Best known, of course, for his portrayal of T.E. Lawrence in David Lean’s grand epic, Lawrence of Arabia, O’Toole was a man of flamboyant talent in both acting and life.…

At the Movies | The Bishop’s Wife

Naturally, I love hearing that readers have liked a recommendation. This week The Bishop’s Wife received thumbs up from a subscriber who mentioned they had purchased (and loved) it after discovering it here. I then read that it is now out on blu ray so I thought a reminder of one of my favorite holiday films might be in order.…

At the Movies | Proof

Yesterday evening was back to school night at my younger daughter’s school and I was reminded that I never did an At the Movies segment to celebrate the onset of the academic year. I have written about other school related favorites in the past such as Goodbye Mr.…

At the Movies | The Sapphires

It sometimes seems a tall order to find a movie both you and your children can enjoy. But if you are looking for a feel-good family film (PG-13) for this holiday weekend, I can heartily recommend The Sapphires. With thumbs up from me, my husband and 13 year old daughter, it clearly satisfies both the age and gender gaps.…

At the Movies | Metropolitan

Metropolitan is a quirky gem of an indie movie offering a look at the holiday season through the lens of a group of preppy young Manhattan socialites on the debutante circuit. If this sounds off-putting, just think of the subject in the hands of a drier-humored Woody Allen or early Eric Roehmer with a dose of Wes Anderson to get the idea.…

At the Movies

I had another holiday move I intended to review today, but due to a tight schedule, just didn’t have a chance to do it justice – I’ll bring it to you as soon as I can. But I hate to leave you movie fans empty handed, especially at this time of year, so I will remind you of one of my very favorites I mentioned a couple of years ago.…

At the Movies

Last weekend my husband happened upon an old favorite on TCM that is rarely on. It’s a classic yet somewhat under the radar movie – just the kind I love to share. And with its wintery alpine setting, it seemed somehow apropos.…

Hearst Designer Visions | Matthew Patrick Smyth for ELLE DECOR

Hearst Magazines’ 6th annual Designer Visions is a marvelously conceived showcase (for more information, see this earlier post). It’s not surprising that the three apartments, one sponsored by each of the Hearst design group magazines, are beautiful but when attending a preview last week, I was impressed with the incredibly detailed back stories created by each of the designers for their imagined muses.…
